Canadian Prison Alpha Director in Uganda for Global Alpha Training
Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 3:23AM From Sue Bennett, Canadian Prison Alpha Director.
We are very excited to have this opportunity to travel to Uganda to take Alpha into the prisons! Just to give you an overview of where we'll be and what we'll be doing - our GAT team is made up of myself (Sue Bennett), Gary my husband, Rob Burr (from Ottawa), Emmy Wilson (from London) and Alexandra Ip (from Singapore). We will be joining two women from Alpha Uganda, Catherine Piwang and Berna Amidore.
Our first stop will be in Kampala, where we'll be staying at the Namirembe Guest House on May 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. While there, we'll be meeting as a team to prepare for our talks on the GAT. We will also be visiting Luzira Prison. If you look up the Condemned Choir singing Sunny Day on the internet, you'll be able to see and read about Luzira Prison.
On May 25th we'll be travelling 4 hours north to Gulu, where the GAT will be held in the cathedral on May 26th, 27th and 28th. For years, the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) terrorized Gulu, taking young children from their homes and teaching them to kill. Many of those youths are now in Gulu Prison, where we'll be visiting. At the GAT, we'll be training between 50 and 60 pastors how to run Alpha in the prisons. The Archbishop and the Vicar are fully behind having Alpha in the prison and will be joining us in the cathedral.
There is a documentary on the internet, called The Invisible Children, which is about the children who travelled at night from their homes to avoid the LRA. There are several other sites on Gulu which provide a good overview of what the region has gone through.
We'll be leaving Gulu on May 29th, and going to Sarova Paraa Safari Lodge in Murchison Falls where we'll be going on an evening game drive, staying overnight, and taking a boat tour in the morning. Afterward, we'll head back to Kampala and fly to London overnight.
We very much appreciate your prayers during our time in Uganda. Specifically, we ask for prayers for our safety, that our guests come with open hearts and minds, that we have no problem getting in to the prisons, that the GAT event be a blessing to all who attend, and that God will send His Holy Spirit to be with us throughout and that He will lead us in everything we do. THANK YOU!!
